Every spring about two million shorebirds from dozens of species make an epic migration from the far north of Asia and the Americas to Australia. Shorebirds or "waders" navigate halfway around the world using migratory routes including the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
Come to our next Wild In Bayside talk and learn about these incredible creatures, their feats of endurance and navigation, the hazards they face, the work researchers are doing to understand them better, and how we can help in Port Phillip Bay and Bayside.
Our guest speaker is Tania Ireton. Tania is a longtime local resident and member of FoNW. She is President of Birdlife Bayside, active in surveying birds in our area and educating everyone about them. She is also one of Australia's top birders.

Every spring about two million shorebirds from dozens of species make an epic migration from the far north of Asia and the Americas to Australia. Around Port Phillip Bay our wader birds feed in the shallows, and the rocky platforms at Rickett's Point are an ideal roosting place for them during high tides. Rickett's Point, now a Marine Sanctuary, is the best place on the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay to see them.
Come on a guided walk around Rickett's Point with Friends of Native Wildlife and experience the variety of marine and bush birds and other wildlife living here. No guarantees, but we hope some waders will be on hand to greet us.
There are some stairs and uneven ground.

Please wear sturdy walking shoes and bring binoculars, sun screen, a hat and sunglasses.
Note that Sunday 4 October is the first day of daylight saving time for 2026-2027.
