2020 Bayside Council Election - Bleazby

Here are responses to our questions from candidates for the Bleazby ward in the 2020 Bayside Council elections.

Q1 Do you think it is important to maintain and increase the diversity and quantity of local fauna species within Bayside? Q2 Do you think that Bayside should do more to improve and encourage shared Open Space for all community uses, including sport, dog walking, picnicking and strolling, walking, provision of habitat for wildlife and active exercise? Q3 Do you strongly support Council incorporating more structurally and species diverse planting suitable for wildlife habitat in all open spaces where it does not compromise the primary purpose or historic significance of the space? For example, understorey planting around the edges of active recreation areas.
DEL PORTO, Alex Yes I do and I support the Elsternwick Reserve and the increased diversity of Fauna. I have personally witnessed the appearance of Black Cockatoos in the area. I have moved a motion at Council to begin a design competition next year for the proposed gateway building that will be built over the next few years. Yes I do I think Council has spent enough money on pavilions and we should invest more into passive recreation. Yes I do.

I have a keen interest in indigenous/native flora and fauna and ecology. I strongly support anything to do with habitat creation, biodiversity and general wildlife conservation. The threat to Bayside's native wildlife posed by development and use of open space was my main impetus for standing as a candidate.

I am also passionate about supporting community organisations such as yours. It is these organisations that make the world a better place.

Q4 Do you support increased efforts to ensure the provision of water for wildlife in Bayside’s open spaces? Q5 Do you support more urgent action on lighting impacts and having an interim approach/policy which is based on the best available knowledge? Q6 Should Council be implementing more effective regulations applicable to domestic animals as identified in their strategies without delay?
DEL PORTO, Alex Yes, climate change is the greatest challenge we face and I was pleased that my suggestion to fast track carbon neutrality for Council by September 2020 was supported by Council. I suggested we buy offsets mostly within Australia and that was adopted. Yes I do. I think we should make sure Cats are desexed and kept within one’s own property.

KIOUSSIS, Thalia Yes. Yes. Am not across the detail of their strategies, however I understand cats are particularly harmful to wildlife and am supportive of them being indoors at night time.

Q7 Should Council place greater importance on ensuring the successful protection of mature trees in considering and designing new development proposals on both private and public land? Q8 Should Council provide greater encouragement to Bayside residents to create wildlife-friendly gardens and resurrect the Gardens for Wildlife trial? Q9 Do you support Council providing the community with more detail as to the allocation of resources to, and an annual report on, implementation of the Biodiversity Action Plan?
DEL PORTO, Alex Yes we are encouraging owners of significant trees to put them on Council’s register. Yes most definitely. I think Council budget papers should be made more easily comprehended.

Getting a strong Gardens For Wildlife program running in Bayside is a personal dream of mine. It would certainly be one of my first projects as a councillor.
